Keroro (ケロロ ) is the main protagonist of Mine Yoshizaki's Keroro Gunso series. Keroro is a sergeant (軍曹 gunsou)[RANKS] and the leader of the Keroro Platoon (ARMPIT Platoon in the Funimation dub). His formal introduction is The Gamma Planetary System, the 58th Planet, Space Invasion Army Special Tactics Platoon Leader, Sergeant Keroro
Character
Physical Appearance
Keroro is an adult Keronian with green and white skin, with a yellow hat and star on his belly. The star insignia on his hat is red.
Whenever Keroro is caught in an explosion he is seen with a large comical black afro, which is a call to the anime's first ending sequence "Afro Sergeant". It has become a running gag throughout the series and even spans to other characters.
He has an affinity for disguises and is seen throughout the series with different wigs and costumes, meant as attempts to impersonate character archetypes for various schemes, as well as Pekoponian Suits for blending outside the house.
Outside of comedic effect, Keroro has no eyebrows, with a hilarious backstory provided for this[3], although said story is questionable at best.
Statistics
Keroro's blood type is O and his body fat percentage is 30%[4]. He is 55.5 centimeters tall (1.8 ft) and weighs 5.555 kilograms.
According to Volume 25 of the manga, Keroro is 10500-years-old in Keronian years.
Personality-wise, Kumiko Watanabe herself stated that she plays Keroro as a 45 year old. Keroro is also revealed to have been a child when Nintendo sold the Game & Watch systems[5], presumably due to the differing flow of time between Earth and Planet Keron.
In the anime, Pururu is stated to have been born in July 1st, 1970 (Keronian calendar)[6]. Since Keroro is around her age, he would thus likely have been born around the same year.
Speech
Normally, Keroro speaks akin to an old military soldier, referring to himself as waga hai (我が輩), while using "dono (殿)" for others.
Keroro usually ends his sentences with de arimasu (であります ), which roughly translates to 'that is it' and is a standard military sentence ending. Keroro says a repeating gerogero (ゲロゲロ) when resonating. Whenever Keroro is scheming, he emits a raspy Ge~ro gero gero... (ゲ~ロゲロゲロ… ) or Gero Gerori (ゲロゲロリ ).
Hilariously, Keroro will often change his manner of speech depending on his mood or the situation, done as a form of Japanese wit. For instance, he can suddenly speak akin to an angsty teenager or drag queen, before switching into another role at random. Since non-Japanese people struggle to understand these cultural jokes, most dubs and translations usually alter or omit them altogether.
In the Funimation dub, he usually uses "frog" in the place of profanity along with some of his platoon members; for example, "What the frog" or "Oh my frog" have been used frequently.
Personality
Keroro is indecisive, scheming, and complacent, but empathic and kind at heart. Likewise, he can go from cowardly and slothful to surprisingly aggressive and determined, depending on the situation. Though possessing quality leadership skills, Keroro rarely acts on them, preferring to read manga, watch television, and build Gundam models.
Since childhood, Keroro was a regular trouble-maker, as well as a bully at times (mostly towards Dororo). Furthermore, he often acted too arrogant for his own good, which frequently led to failure. However, he also proved very resilient against cruelty, much to Dororo's admiration[7].
In adulthood, Keroro remains mostly the same, although less "bratty" in attitude. Still, if upset, Keroro can end up crying and/or throw a tantrum. Moreover, he is reluctant to fight back whenever mistreated, especially from physical threats.
When exposed to too much humidity, Keroro reverts to a state from "Back Then". In this state, he becomes more competent and ruthless, even against Natsumi herself. The only way he can revert to his normal self is if eaten by a Nyororo or scared by Fuyuki's wrath.
While downright childish at his worst, Keroro is a good caretaker, looking after Kiruru. and Babubu extremely well. Moreover, he refuses to abandon people that truly need help, to the point to protecting Kiruru. from the Keron army itself.
Having a constant need to entertain the masses, Keroro compulsively slips on a banana peel whenever he sees one on the ground.[8] In the Funimation dub, the narrator says he does this because he has an acute case of Hilarity-itis. Likewise, Keroro is prone to referencing pop culture at random, even playing them out as a form of comedy.
In spite of his comedic nature, Keroro is rather sharp-minded at times, bringing up good points repeatedly. More often than not, he also stops his subordinates from engaging in petty squabbles, being the only one capable of fully uniting them as a team. Overall, Keroro's demeanor fluctuates significantly, ranging from incompetent and selfish to capable and kind-hearted.
For the Funimation dub, Keroro has a much more nasty demeanor, being openly mean and selfish towards others.
Strengths
Much like his personality, Keroro's skills depend mainly on the need of the story. Most times however, he will be utterly useless in a fight, acting cowardly and weak-willed.
Among the Keroro platoon though, Keroro actually far exceeds his platoonmates in potential, something his superiors have noted. Notably, in their "awakened" dragon forms, Keroro is easily the strongest, with the other four swiftly defeated by him in a battle melee.
Whenever acting more seriously, Keroro is proven capable of various feats such as: advanced athletic skills, learning high-level ninjutsu from Dororo, firing energy beams, engineering advanced machinery, and matching Giroro and Dororo in a three-way fight[9].
Due to his everyday life as the house keeper in the Hinata household, Keroro is an exceptional cleaner and curler, possessing more stamina than Natsumi. He also became a natural at curling because of all the excessive sweeping Natsumi makes him do.
Keroro gains a burst of energy whenever he eats Starfruit, which, according to Kururu, contains many qualities of Keronian medicine. Keroro has proven himself a brilliant military commander and strategist when he applies himself, which is hardly often.
If pushed, Keroro can subconsciously use his Keron Star for greater authority and power, to the extent of swiftly subduing Kiruru itself[10]. He has as well used the Keron Star to discipline Zoruru when Dororo was threatened. This ability is called the Super ☆ Captain's Order.
Weaknesses
Despite possessing incredible abilities, Keroro's lack of willpower makes him unable to use it without proper motivation, which is scarce. Also, he is often prone to impulsive and inane decisions, being a sucker for manipulative people.
According to the anime in Episode 123, Keroro's biggest fear is his own father. His others fears are broken Gundam models, the invasion timer running out, and overstocking the Valentines candy.
He also has a fear of banana slug aliens (as shown in Episode 69).
Along with the other members of the Keroro Platoon, Keroro is afraid of the Butt Firecracker (ケツ爆竹), and he will clutch his butt tightly whenever he is mentioned.
Like almost all other Keronians, he fears Nyororos, due to their hostile attitude.
Childhood
For More Information see Chibi Keroro
Long ago on Planet Keron, Giroro, Pururu, and Zeroro were the childhood "best friends" of Keroro. Keroro had a "Go to the place where one is told not to go, and enter the place where one is told not to enter" way of life, which often led him on numerous, often dangerous adventures.
Inspired by his father, a famed war veteran, Keroro set his sights toward becoming a soldier. He would often wear a fake Keron star on his chest, hopeful of becoming a captain. Like many Keronian children, Keroro spent much of his youth in military school.
Relationships
Keroro's Father
Keroro feels both fear and admiration for his father, awed by the latter's reputation as a famous soldier. Whenever interacting with one another, Keroro will do what he can to make his father proud, being joyful when succeeding.
Keroro's Mother
Keroro loves his mother dearly, if somewhat bashful of her overbearing personality. Unlike with his father, Keroro does not appear to fear his mother, though will also quickly falter if ever scolded by her.
Keroro's Grandfather
When Keroro was younger, he would listen to his grandfather's stories about Nontruma and how fearsome they were.
Fuyuki Hinata
Upon their first meeting, Fuyuki took an interest in Keroro, leading to their close friendship. Keroro will instantly save Fuyuki whenever needed, something which Fuyuki appreciates.
Natsumi Hinata
Keroro is quick to cower before Natsumi, caused by her harsh punishments. Natsumi is also somewhat cruel to Keroro at times, something even Mois pointed out at one point[6]. However, in more recent stories, the two have gotten along better, akin to a brother and sister.
Keroro often refers to Natsumi as "Natsumi-dono", whereas Natsumi on the other hand usually refers to Keroro as "Boke-gaeru (Stupid frog)" instead of his name.
Aki Hinata
Aki is very dotting towards Keroro, treating him and the rest of the Platoon as part of her family. Keroro sees Aki as a mother-figure as well, referring to her as "Mama-dono". When de-aged and mistaken as Fuyuki, Aki openly enjoyed her time with Keroro, wishing that she could have spent her childhood as Keroro's friend. [11]
Giroro
Keroro is childhood friends with Giroro, with they and Dororo going through several misadventures. Whenever Keroro slacks off as the leader, Giroro will complain angrily, being exasperated on a regular basis. In response, Keroro will often point out Giroro's flaws as a soldier and subordinate, leading to several arguments. Despite these moments, the two are the best of friends, with Giroro acting as Keroro's second-in-command in urgent situations.
Dororo/Zeroro
Like with Giroro, Dororo is one of Keroro's closest friends. However, since childhood, Keroro usually mistreats Dororo in more selfish moments, something Dororo resents. However, Keroro will show remorse for this behavior at times, especially when seeing Dororo in sorrow. Furthermore, Keroro is not above risking his own career to protect Dororo from their superiors at the Keron army[8], showing that he does value their friendship.
Tamama
Tamama has a huge admiration for Keroro, affectionately calling him "Gunsou-san" ( Mr. Sergeant Sir in the Funimation dub). Keroro, however, remains almost 100% unaware of his twisted admiration of him, barring certain cases. Though growing disappointed with Keroro's lackluster performance, Tamama is still normally a faithful subordinate, something Keroro appreciates.
Kururu
Keroro rarely ever argues with Kururu, if rather annoyed by the latter's obnoxious attitude. Similarly, despite pointing out Keroro's incompetence from time to time, Kururu tends to treat him with some respect, obeying orders without much complaint. Furthermore, in the manga, Kururu openly protected Keroro from the Garuru platoon, despite his own life being at stake.
Keroro even goes as far as singing a song about how great Kururu is in the Funimation dub of the episode.
Angol Mois
Mois holds deep romantic affection for Keroro, affectionately calling him "Oji-sama" (Uncle) and acting his secretary. While Keroro normally does not comment on this, he treats Mois with open fondness. However, it is clear that he is aware of said feelings, using it to his advantage at one point[12]. Furthermore, it is hinted that Keroro does at least somewhat reciprocate, such as when he affectionately kissed Mois in part A of Episode 266.
Pururu
As children, Keroro had a crush on Pururu, similar to Giroro and Dororo. In at least one instance, he blushes to Pururu, implying that said feelings still persist on some level. However, Keroro has also openly supported Pururu to have an intimate relationship with Garuru and Bariri, showing that he simply wishes for her happiness overall.
Kana
In Episode 304, Keroro met her when his hat blew away from the wind while doing laundry. Kitten found the hat and gave it to Kana. Keroro asked her for his hat, but Kana didn't want to. Later, Keroro returned to her house to ask again. Kana then promised to give his hat back before she moves away. But the next day, two boys took it from her at school and told Keroro, Fuyuki, and Natsumi. They went out to find it. They found the two boys and they told Kana that the hat had a hole. Later Kana told Keroro that she will fix it for him. Before she left she promised she would never forget Keroro, and the same for Keroro.

Pekoponian suits
Robotic suits used by Keroro to blend in with Earth's population. However, his face is left uncovered. If questioned about it, he claims that his face is a mask. In the manga, there's a limited number of variations and all of them are named, while in the anime new models constantly appear without any introduction, although there are a few exceptions.
Name | Description |
---|---|
Pekoponian Suit Mk-I | A suit modeled on a officer worker. Unlike the later models, which were produced by Kururu, this one came from Tamama. |
|
A muscular suit that keeps the colors and personal mark of a Keronian in spite of its human shape.
In the anime, it's eventually confused with a super hero suit when Keroro accidentally gets in the way of a thief.[13] |
Pekoponian Suit Mk-IV Bear Killer | The Pekoponian Suit Mk-IV Bear Killer(地球人スーツMk-IV“熊殺し”仕様) is a clunky armored combat suit used by Keroro in the manga to fight against a bear prepared by Kururu. However, once it falls on its back, it can't get up anymore.[14] |
Specialized Battle Pekoponian Suit Mk-V | The Specialized Battle Pekoponian Suit Mk-V(戦闘専用地球人スーツMk-V) is a new combat suit Keroro uses in New Year's Day, while believing that Earth had been invaded by other aliens. It's supposedly powerful, but never showed its power.[15] |
Pekoponian Suit Mk-VI | A modified version of the original Pekoponian Suit, but in casual clothes. It's designed to have no presence and assimilate into the background. However, the user's head still stands out, making it a failure.[16]
|
Pekoponian Suit (First Dangal Type) | Anime-exclusive suit. It was made for a cosplay competition, resembling a human sized version of the Dangal, with its head replaced by Keroro's. It comes with a helmet that can completely cover Keroro's face, unlike other Pekoponian suits. Although it carries beam saber hilts, they're only props unusable for combat.[18] |
Ultimate Pekoponian Suit | Anime-exclusive suit. It's the original Pekoponian Suit Mk-I with the "Ultimate In-Character Device" attached to it. The appearance is the same, aside from a small display on its back, which describes its current role. While wearing this suit, Keroro forgets his own identity, acting completely in-character as a 24 years old Pekoponian office worker. He even believed that his face was just a mask that somehow had gotten stuck. Removal from the suit immediately restores Keroro's memories and personality.[19] |
Pekoponian Suit (Housewife Type) | Anime-exclusive suit. It resembles a short and overweight middle aged woman.[20] |
Costumes and Transformations
Name | Description | Image | Debut |
---|---|---|---|
Afro Sergeant | Keroro in an afro wig, funky disco clothing complete with fringes and glitter. He ends his sentences in "Me-ow!" and is a victim to uncontrollable dancing. This is parody of Dance Man, who in turn wrote the theme song, Afro Sergeant. Keroro also inexplicably wears his afro whenever he becomes burnt. | Episode 4 | |
"Super" Keroro | Keroro's helmet changes as a parody of Son Goku's super saiyan or Sonic's super form. If this form changes his power level or not is unknown, however it does allow him to move 4 times his normal speed as well as give him flight abilities. He first used it in the manga to rescue Tamama from "Dark Momoka" when both character's first officially debut. | ||
Chibi Keroro | Young Keroro appears many times, such as in Chibi Kero: Secret of the Kero Ball!? and the ending sequence for Spinning, Turning, Once Around. | Episode 4 | |
Keroro from "Back Then (あの頃ケロロ Anokoro Keroro) | Keroro's body becomes glossy when the humidity of the environment has reached a level higher than that of Keron. "Back then" is the time when Keroro still lived in Planet Keron. His combat, power, and intelligence increase threefold, as evidenced by Keroro's ability to take down Natsumi with but a whisper into her ear. However, because of his strengthened biological reaction, it is easy for him to be discovered by hostile space aliens such as Viper and Nyororo (Sucks the moisture out of him). His speaking style also changes during this form. In Part B of Episode 127 of the anime, parodies of Ultimate Muscle and Mobile Fighter G Gundam are seen when Keroro enters this stage. | ||
Space Junji (宇宙淳二 Uchuu Junji) | Keroro takes this "Junji Form" when telling scary ghost stories. He even dons his mustache. | ||
Captain Keroro | A younger Keroro appears as the new leader of the Garuru Platoon, Captain Keroro (ケロロ大尉 Keroro Taii, Clone Keroro in the manga)[RANKS][21][22][23].
In the manga, this Keroro is a clone of the original Keroro but in anime, he is brainwashed by Garuru. In both, he wears Char Aznable's helmet in place of the original ones and becomes more sinister than before, willing to kill both Fuyuki and Natsumi when the Garuru Platoon tried to invade Earth in place of Keroro Platoon. In the anime, he returned back to normal after briefly regressed to his juvenile state and return to his normal appearances. |
||
Keroshiki Soldier (ケロしきグンじん) | |||
Kerokko Aozora (青空ケロ子 Aozora Kerokko) | During summer, Keroro joins a contest at Doinaka beach. | ||
Fake Nemo (ネモもどき Nemo modoki) | Episode 20 | ||
Keroro Kaiser Z (ケロロカイザーZ Keroro Kaizā Z) | A parody of Mazinkaiser and Mazinger z. | Episode 24-B | |
Fake Chigusa Tsukikage (月影千草もどき Tsukikage Chigusa modoki) | Episode 29-A | ||
Captain James Hook (ジェイムズ・フック船長 Jeimuzu Fukku Senchou) | Episode 29-A | ||
Fake Char Aznable (シャア・アズナブルもどき Shaa Azunaburu modoki) | [24] | Episode 30 | |
Full Armor Keroro (フルアーマーケロロ Furu Āmā Keroro) | When Keroro enters this stage, his whole body is heavily equipped. He transforms into this stage by pressing the star on his forehead. However, its only weak point (which Giroro immediately exploits) is the head, which is completely bare. The sequence this form is used in is a reference to Gundam NT-1 "Alex" of Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, as the weapons seen on the armor resemble those of Kämpfer.

Encounter 31 (manga), Episode 43-B | |
Match Girl (マッチ売りの少女風) | Some of Keroro's imagination when he can't sell any sweet potato dangos (ikinari dangos). It is from the story of the Little Match Girl. | ||
Kosuke Kindaichi | Episode 54-A | ||
General Keroro (ケロロ将軍 Keroro Shogun)[RANKS] | Episode 55-B | ||
Madame Kero (おケロ夫人 O-kero fujin) | Keroro claims to be a tennis master when dressed like this, acting like a wannabe high class girl. He's actually cosplaying as Reika Ryūzaki, the Madame Butterfly from Aim for the Ace!, including carrying her R.R. initials in his racket. | Episode 56-A | |
Kerohachi Kerono (ケロ野ケロ八 Kerono Kerohachi) | Episode 63-A | ||
Boss (ボス Bosu) | Episode 65-A | ||
Meroro (メロロ Meroro) | The disguise used by Keroro to infiltrate Dark Keroro's forces. He acts like a stereotypical foreigner in love with Japanese culture, and claimed to love sukiyaki, sushi and Gunpla... or tempura.[25] | Movie 3 | |
Kerokko (ケロ子 Kerokko) | Episode 66 | ||
Galaxy Group Grunt | When Mutsumi sent Fubuki Sakuragasaki to face Keroro in an Arcade Game challenge with Earth's fate on the line, he also changed Keroro into this form, which mimics the appearance of low ranking members of the antagonists of Arcade Gamer Fubuki to hide Keroro's true form. | Encounter 135 | |
Dragon Keroro | During the fourth movie, Shion turns Keroro into a green dragon. The upper part of his head is darker green with two straight horns, a yellow crest with a red star symbol, and yellow flaps like the ones Keroro has in Keronian form. He has an crooked yellow star symbol. When he first turned into a dragon and lost his mind, he was able to defeat the entire platoon singed-handed. He can produce blasts of fire which he calls Keroro Fire, project a star-shaped force field, and can pull out random items like a hammer with the insignia of France. Dragon Keroro is also seen in Episode 356.
|
Movie 4 | |
Akira | Introduced as a singing dancing idol invader part of Operation Maru-Otsu (〇乙), Akira is actually Keroro controlling an android via the Invasion Substitute System, where the users control the androids using full-body suits in a special control room hidden within the Keroro Platoon Headquarters. The system was developed by Kururu having previously done research on what Pekoponian girls preferred in men. | Episode 320-A | |
Runaway Keroro | Runaway Keroro is the name given to Keroro under the control of Myou. He first appears in Chapter 189, after Myou comes over to visit, along with Tomosu Hinohara. He appears to be very rebellious, having defeated Natsumi, and is extremely insane. He was also released as a charm with the ordering of Volume 23. | Encounter 189 | |
Friend Keroro | Also known as Keroro Girl Type. In a collaboration with the Kemono Friends mobile game, Keroro and his platoon take on female human forms due to the effects of a mysterious substance known as Sandstar, changing their physical appearances, voices, and personalities.
|

Handsome Keroro | In a collaboration with the Smiral merchandising label, in order to obtain more invasion funds, the Keroro platoon become handsome men due to an invention created by Kururu to become popular with girls. | Handsome Keroro Gunso Invasion Operation | |
Super ☆ Captain's Order (超☆隊長命令 Chō☆taichō meirei) | The "Super Captain's Order" is arguably Keroro's most powerful form. It commands the highest authority from enemies and members of the Keron Army. As shown in episode 336, Zoruru immediately followed Keroro's orders this power was activated. This was due to Keroro's sudden drastic appearance. The form casts a dark shadow on his face, only leaving his eyes and his glowing Keron Star. The aura of Keroro changes too, and becomes scarier. The authority of the Super Captain's Orders are powered by the Keron Star, and not much is known about how it works.
The ability of the Super Captain's Order hints at Keroro's true potential. |
