  • buta ni shinju (豚に真珠Pearls before swine) - (1)
  • mago ni ishou (馬子に衣裳, The tailor makes the man / Fine feathers make fine birds) (also "mago ni mo ishou")
  • uma no mimi ni nenbutsu (馬の耳に念仏, Praying to a horse's ear / Like water off a duck's back) - (2) Not heeding what others say
  • nuka ni kugi (ぬかに釘, Drive a nail through a pile of rice bran) - (2)
  • sumeba miyako (住めば都, If you're living there, it becomes your hometown) - you can get used to living anywhere, if you live somewhere for long enough it will become your home.
  • uso happyaku (うそ八百, Eight hundred lies) - full of lies
  • kappa no kawa nagare (河童の川流れ, Even a kappa can drown) - even experts make mistakes[2]
